It's Not About You

I am currently working through Lysa TerKeurst's 40 Days Through The Bible study book and tonight's focus was in Exodus 3. While reading through this chapter, two distinct characteristics of God stood out to me, the latter of which she covered within the study.

  1. GOD SEES OUR PAIN

After reading verses 7-10 I felt a sense of peace knowing that God sees us when we are hurting. When talking to Moses through the burning bush God said "I have certainly seen the oppression of my people [Israel] in Egypt. I have heard their cries of distress because of their harsh slave drivers. Yes, I am aware of their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them..." (v.7-8a). God was reassuring Moses that He knew what was going on, and He was going to step in.

This brought me great comfort as I thought back on times in my life when I questioned if God knew just how badly I was hurting. If He knew, He would fix it, right? While we may not always know God's timing or His perfect plan, we can know that He is present in our suffering. We are not alone and He is always working. Thank You God for always being present, and for always caring about the pain in our lives.

2. IT'S NOT ABOUT US, IT'S ABOUT GOD

As I read on a little further, I came to where God then called Moses to be a part of His plan to rescue His people. The Bible says Moses protested to God and asked Him "Who am I to appear before Pharoh? Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?" (v.11) God's answer is incredible because it has nothing to do with Moses. His response is instead the promise of reassurance, "I [God] will be with you" (v.12). What else do we need? Nothing!

If I were in Moses' shoes I would have asked the same questions. How unqualified am I to carry out such an important part of God's plan? God reminds us that He is sufficient. We don't need to be the hero, we just need to be obedient. Thank You God for being enough, and thank You for the honor of calling us to serve You and serve others.

Lysa beautifully pointed out that "who we are is not nearly as important as who God is" (Lysa TerKeurst, 40 Days Through The Bible, p. 42). God is everything we need at all times in all circumstances.

There have been a lot of instances in my life recently where I have truly had to throw my hands up and trust God to carry my raft through the storm. As a natural worrier and controller, I am learning to find peace in the parts of my life that do not have a clear answer. I am working on allowing myself to see God in these moments instead of my own panic or failed plans. The reminder that He is sufficient and He is present is a constant need, and I am thankful for it tonight.

Lord, thank You. Without You I am nothing, yet You love me enough to rescue me. Help me to remember who You say You are and to trust in Your sovereignty. You are enough for today and that is enough for me. Help me to live according to the purpose You have called me to. Crush my doubts and fears and help me to keep my gaze set on You through any trials I may face.
